WATER CONSERVATION
Polytechnique staff led the water conservation effort at John Wayne Airport (JWA.) The first steps included mapping water meters and compiling 5 years of water use data. Polytechnique studied data trends, identified areas of improvement, and worked with JWA's sustainability working group to plan projects, implement initiatives, and track progress.
Water-saving initiatives included evaluating options for alternative cooling water sources (reclaimed water or air conditioning condensate) and conducting inspections to identify and repair leaks.
Polytechnique's efforts led to the identification of a leak at the central utility plant. Repairing the pipe led to a projected potable water use reduction of over 3 million gallons per year, an estimated annual cost savings of $14,000 for JWA.
